Spravato: Dosage & Administration

Over recent years, more medical facilities and mental health treatment centers have been offering Spravato to help patients treat severe depression. Unlike many antidepressant medications that are taken by mouth once per day until someone no longer feels like they need it, Spravato is administered via nasal spray less often for a specific period of time. If you or a loved one is interested in Spravato, keep reading to learn about how often Spravato needs to be administered and at what dosage each session.

What Is Spravato?

Spravato is a brand-name medication prescribed for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts/actions. This medication, which contains the drug esketamine, has the potential to ease symptoms of depression in as little as a few hours.

How Spravato Therapy Works

This medication must be administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional at a certified medical or mental health treatment facility. When a patient shows up for their Spravato appointment, they will start by getting their blood pressure checked. If everything looks all good with their blood pressure, the specialist will instruct them on how to administer the nasal spray. Once the patient is finished, they will stay at the facility for about two hours to ensure that they don’t experience any serious side effects.

A person’s dosage of Spravato depends on how their body responds to it. Their doctor will usually start them off at a low dosage and increase it over time if they are seeing success. A nasal spray device comes with 28 mg of Spravato. Each spray contains 14 mg, which is half of one container of Spravato. On average, most patients who use Spravato have a dosage of two or three devices each session. The first dose typically lies somewhere around 56 mg, or four sprays, and will stay that way until a doctor determines if it is a good idea to increase it. When a dosage is increased, it is usually raised to 84 mg.

How Often Is Spravato Administered?

Spravato should be administered multiple times over the course of several weeks. There are two phases of this treatment: a starting phase and an ongoing phase. The starting phase lasts for the first four weeks of treatment. During this time, patients will take the medication two times every week. Once this phase is complete, the patient and their doctor will have a discussion to figure out whether or not to continue with Spravato.

If they decide to keep going, the ongoing phase will start at week five and last until week eight. Throughout this period, patients will take Spravato once a week. At week nine and after that, patients use the medication either once every week or two weeks until they and their doctor decide that they’re ready to complete their treatment.
